Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Always practice self arrests on a concave slope, not a convex one, just in case it doesn't work! :-)

Oops. Sorry.

I re-read the posts to try and make sure I had it the right way round, and still got it wrong.

2 more hills until he gets to the A66 and heads into the Northern fells - amazing stuff.

Wonder how bad Storm Barra's going to be in the Lakes ?

Gus, I think it's going to be pretty bad. Let's cross our fingers for him.

Given he's no longer in a 'race' with Tom the smart move has to be a prolonged rest when the worst of the storm is due. The leg in the Northern Fells offer several escape routes (e.g. Mosedale or the northern edge) where he could head off and sit it out. He doesn't even have to stay at the point he stops at, as long as he restarts in the same place. So there is nothing to stop him dropping to the road and then being taken to a house elsewhere. He has some smart experienced people in his camp and I can't imagine that they haven't already got a set of options available for him given the forecast.

How long can someone stop for and it still be a ‘live’ attempt?

AFAIK as long as they like. The clock just keeps running. When Joss set his record he took several rests away from the route.

We were discussing the same thing this morning. In theory he could nip home to Rydal, have a night in a comfy bed and then return to the point where he left the route. Whether he would choose to do that is another matter ....

Looks like they’re on the back-up tracker, it’s been cutting corners (10-minute positioning rather than 1?)

Mmm, that's interesting. I saw that one of James's supporters had taken it back to Windermere with him, it must have been reunited with the team on the fell. Someone had to work hard to do that! :-)
