Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

I have a lovely pair of fleece lined “waterproof” walking trousers that work brilliantly walking all day in the rain - but sit down for a snack or whatever and they fail pretty quickly and a soggy backside results

During the 1992 KIMM I had a rather hair raising experience coming off Place Fell as a result of using that descent technique NE (as did quite a number of fellow competitors on the Elite course that day). It's the closest I've ever come to being an MRT statistic. Fortunately I walked away with just had an array of bruises to show for it and some more valuable experience to guide me in the future. I made a vow to never ever to use that technique again in winter conditions without an ice axe to hand. When it goes wrong it goes wrong very fast and it isn't an experience I recommend!

"When it goes wrong it goes wrong very fast!" sums it up completely. Once the fun was over, it started to get serious .... just about at the point where the contours start getting a bit closer together!

Paul NE was out with Tom not James on Yoke but more importantly the key difference is that the shape of the slope means you can see the bottom and what's between you and it!

*chuckles* paulcook! He needs a flying saucer or a magic carpet, but then it would be uncontrollable descent again and probably a bumpy ride! ;)
