On road i think OM , i have a MTB which would do the job for off road stuff, but i am not to good on the bike off road...lol wobble wobble splat !!!

Magbag, I got one of these specialized.com there is a ladies specific version. It is a hybrid but basically billed as a racer with flat handlebars. I've heard of a few people using this for entry level. £399 down to £279 for the '07 from Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op. And its wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! They are pushing the '08 now, so search around.

Yup, just wait 'til you needs lights, locks, tubes, cleaner, lubricant and mudguards. I thought running was expensive.
