No idea, Matt, but my hunch is with yours.

Think 90-100 is blummin fast. Think this has (someone's going to tell me this is nonsense) something to do with Lance Armstrong making super high cadences 'trendy'. Did I misremember Indurain being the opposite - big gears, relatively low cadence?

My ideal cadence, as I posted on the smelly thread, is between 90-100 at an average speed of 35/40 kms/hr on the flat. I like high candence, always have done and never understood people pushing those big gears when you have smaller ones to use... but that is just me...

I also think that the longer your legs, the more suited you are to high candence riding. Or maybe I just want to believe that :-)

If they are just rubber grips a sharp stanley knife a carefully cut the grips off. Or get something like a knitting needle shove it down between the grip and bar and spray something like WD40 between the gap and every now and then twist the grip. But make sure you clean the bar fully before putting the new grips on.

Bar grips go with you there idio, can use a screw driver. need to make sure that if you are putting them back on that they are free from the wet stuff you have used, or it will take ages for them to grip.

bit of spit will help to get them on and it will dry fast.

as for cadence, hight pedalling action with low gears will help to save your legs from fatigue, but with running properly it takes a lot pf patience and practise to get there.

bernad hinault was given this advice when he was a kid: " watch the pro's and see how fast they pedal, try to pedal as fast as them, then one day if you are good enough, you will be using the same size gears."

in a nut shell really.

unfit people find it easier to pedal more slowly. I do not have the same speed pedalling as I did when racing many moons ago.

a good test is to find a short hill, not too steep, but you cycle down regularly. choose a small gear 42/39x17-19, pedal as fast in this down the hill and see if you 'bounce' on the saddle'. this is poor pedalling and as you get better a pedalling keep coming back and testing yourself to see how the bounce is disappearing?
