It depends what you want but I would rate Cascadia higher for ease of getting going and general goodness. This is not just because it is what I am currently playing! For games within recent years and <2 of 5 for «weightiness» it scores highly here boardgamegeek.com if you use the advanced search function.

I wouldn't recommend Pandemic as an entry game, as it is a co-operative game. That means that players aren't pitted against each other in the way they are in most games; they have to work together to overcome the game's "system", in this case a rapidly spreading global pandemic, so there is an added layer of dynamics which can stand or fall on how well the players can co-operate and this depends on personalities as much as anything else. It's a great game, by the way! |

Agree with others - Settlers is a classic that anyone (including me!) who has been playing these games for 10 years or more will usually rave about, although it is better with three players than with four. Look at Ticket to Ride USA edition which has been incredibly successful and, if that works, there are many variants to follow up with. Cascadia is fun and in similar vein you might look at Carcassonne or Bärenpark. Finally, it's not one of my favourites, as I find it a little too abstract (lacking in theme), but Azul is also popular. |

Carcassonne was another one that I was recommended when I looked into this a few years ago. What do you do if you don't have any friends by the way?! G |

Carcassonne was another one that I was recommended when I looked into this a few years ago. Here's my take on Carcassonne: fetcheveryone.com/blog-share.php?id=439311 What do you do if you don't have any friends by the way?! A lot of people, regardless of friendship matters, play solo board games. There has been an increasing demand in recent years for designers to offer solo variants of their games which give an experience that is comparable to the multiplayer game. In some, you play against a "dummy" player, in some you play a "system" of some sort. For a game like Settlers, it wouldn't work, as the trading of resources with other players is a key part of the game. Many of them are probably a bit more complex, but for entry-level solo'able games, you might look at something like Cartographers or Sprawlopolis. |

I am a big Carcassonne fan. I have also play aged Ticket to Ride a few times and have bought it for Mr H for Christmas. I saw Stander’s comment, it was definitely not a board game! |
