If you think Terraforming Mars is long and complex... maybe don't try Great Western Trail! Although the storyline/mechanics are better in GWT!

I said it was OVER complicated.

For what it is. For no other reason that it can be. It doesn't particularly add to the game play having 27 million different options. I exaggerate (slightly) of course.

I have very many far more complicated games in my collection, so complexity has never been an issue. Other than it then makes finding suitable opponents .

I'm an avid 18XX player for instance, just don't get to play it often enough currently. Covid currently an issue obviously, but also the 18XX group of players I used to play with have moved, died, etc and I also took an extended break from gaming when my wife died and I was a single father with a young child.

Am slowly re-establishing a new 18XX group of players local to me. Or was before this damn pandemic.

Sorry guys for being MIA. I'm afraid that my mother having a cardiac event and having a pacemaker fitted, my wife being an emergency admission with Pancreatitis, followed by having a suspected stroke has left me reeling. Anyway, most things are getting back on track, both of them are fine and the worry is disappearing

If you want any recommendations on TtR I certainly have collected most of them, but never got The Nordics, France or Marklin. Our goto map is Pennsylvania, has a different route to winning than just completing tickets.

For gamestores, I tend to use Zatu Games online store, they are a bricks and mortar store out of Norwich and have used BoardGameExtras. The bgextras site is basic but I have found them reliable, especially if you want sleeves etc.

Re other games, especially if you want interactive word type games, I would look at Codenames. It is certainly quick and will provide an hour of entertainment whilst being incredibly easy to learn (games are short, so an hour is 2-4 games). The other we use a lot is Dixit, again another very simple game to learn, an hour or so for a game. For another interactive game, especially if libated, is Walk the Plank. Great to play across generations and again incredibly simple.

As a family we stay away from deep, strategic, tactical games with rules that take an age to read and longer to explain, we don't play often enough to get into the deep strategy/ route to winning/ time to setup, play and complete.

For Flamme Rouge there is an app for IoS and I assume Android, to manage peloton (sequence of races) and to make new courses. It's good. I used it to develop a Tour de Yorkshire race based on the 4 stages of the 2019 race. We "raced" it over the summer to good effect, using 3 player controlled teams and 2 npc teams. BoardGameGeek have some good enduser add on rules for NPC teams. The NPC teams certainly get in the way!!

Hope it helps. If I don't respond feel free to PM me.

Cheers, the great thing was that both were well looked after by the NHS, the stressful bit is that both were in hospital on their own, with no family support. As I said both are well on the way to recovery.

No need to apologise for being MIA ftrobbie. When it comes to this thread - it quite literally 'is only a game' - and lots of things are more important. Glad to hear that things are improving and there is less worry.

I'm sat about 2m from a Zatu games box addressed to Mrs VJ which is currently sealed... I might need to investigate the FR app on the 25th - just saying... :)

I've looked at Dixit several times but never been quite sure. MiniVJ#1 has memory, reading and processing issues and therefore doesn't join in with many family games - she usually joins us at the table with some craft activity instead. But I have wondered whether Dixit was something that would work for us all.

VJ re Dixit, no memory or reading, it's creative word/ picture association with a twist. My wife a non gamer, enjoys playing it. The only downside is whether you can be creative enough, the boys struggled with it until they got to about 11/12 years of age. They were too literal and therefore struggled with generating scores. However once they allowed their creativity to come to the fore, games got genuinely close. It now depends on what cards you hold on when other people set the task and how skilled (lucky) you are. It may work for you depending on how well MiniVJ#1 can process words/ phrases and pictures in oblique ways.

I’ve played Dixit with my nephews. I find it annoying because you have to think of a description for a picture that’s not too obvious. My mind is logical and analytical and creative language isn’t really my thing. They seem to love it though.

Dixit is great fun. Yes, you have to get over the "being creative" thing and be prepared to think quite laterally. Once you have done that, it becomes a test of whether you can find allusions/references that some but not all of the other players will get. This is because the clue giver scores nothing if nobody gets the answer right or everybody gets the answer right - you need to match with some people only.

This leads to my younger daughter and me trying to find Lord of the Rings references as we know no-one else will get those. Dr S and I try to reference places we have been on holiday since the children left home, so we can match. Our daughters invariably find ways of matching on areas of mutual knowledge/reference while blocking Dr S and me out. It's all great fun.
