Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Seems to be taking me forever to get to 70 whereas I go from 60-67 pretty easily. Could be to do with the lack of races though, maybe I would have got there this year with a bit of competition.

I set up a virtual 5K handicap with some friends which motivated us. Might be worth considering?

Everyone is racing in different locations. The rules are just that the course is consistent and either out and back or a loop so not to benefit from wind or decent.

I use a google form (front end to google spreadsheets) where runners can upload their time with proof before the deadline.

First run is a scratch run to set the handicap, 2nd run would have everyone finishing in 60 minutes exactly - their run vs handicap. Of course, some are faster / slower and thats how we decide a winner.

The handicap is adjusted as the best time in the last 6 runs which helps rotate the podium a bit. It also means if someone is having a bad trend, that resets after a bit.

auburnette, that's essentially the same pattern my wava results followed, under the old scoring I once edged over 69 but never made it to 70. At the moment it feels unattainable, unfortunately, I just can't get any decent training block under my belt without some issue or other knocking me back. You have plenty of time on your side, I'm sure persistence will get you there.

I like that idea, Kieren!

Well, I've got a (real life!) marathon on the 4th October to get out of the way, I doubt my WAVA at that distance will be too impressive but once I've recovered I will target 5k and maybe the mile again, I ran a mile which would have given 67.7 WAVA without too much dedicated training so that might be a promising distance for me. Looking to keep my volume up even once the marathon is done with which should help.

When we get another cool day I'm going to do a time trial of a distance of 3000m or less to try to get a genuine 70% again. I only need one distance that's not 10km or half marathon.

Planning on heading to Maryport prom when I manage to catch time on a cooler day, squeezed out a 69% in the 5k there last year.

Good call, Snoot. Fast course on a cool evening without too much wind or too many promenaders. Both times I did the race in 2018 it was roasting.

Didn’t do the first one in 2018 but did the rest and got faster each time. Apparently the first was the hottest!

The first was very hot, the second wasn't much less hot. I was away for the other two. Planned to do the Carlisle 5k series this year, but I'll be surprised if any of the races go ahead.
