I regularly used to do 5k non-stop pool swims many years ago when I was IM training. It was a complete head job, always wanted to stop because I was bored out of my mind. I went in the pool today for the first time for years because my wife wanted to swim. Due to covid, the sessions are time limited and we got there late. Managed to do 17 lengths and it was hard. Max continuous was 100m.
I'd be interested in doing 5k again, but I think it would have to be open water. Must look into that. Good luck everyone.

azx, for me it is definitely more of a mental challenge. I used to knock of 1.5km without any real trouble and a few years ago would do training sessions of 3km. But yup, it is really boring if you don't stop every 400m.

And she's off! The pool opened yesterday so I went along and put in a 200m easy warmup, a steady 800m continuous (with flippers), and 200m is "torpedo" drills.
It's not my official start to the programme but it has been months, if not more than a year, since I bothered swimming 800m without stopping. My half-way split was beautiful.

Ok, think a plan might be coming together here. Managed to book at slot at a pool for Wednesday, so will dip my toe in the water and see what happens!
Now, where are those goggles...
