I ran 13k (8 miles) in the forest this morning, practicing marathon pacing. I didn't take any water with me.

No need for water on my 3.1!! And I felt awful from the start😂.

I quite like isotonic drinks but know that a small pinch of salt in water can be good enough on long runs if the yuk taste of isotonic are not on. "S!Caps" are a good alternative, they're buffered electrolyte capsules to take with water.

I note you drink water on a Saturday night FF😂...I tend to have a beer!!😂

A nuisance factor for me re fuelling is that for gastric reasons I can't eat after 7pm in the evening. Which is why I'd decided to have food before my early morning runs--but that hasn't worked out. Even more unsuccessful on going experimentation after all these years😂

Steve, I agree with a pinch of salt in water for long runs. In my early marathon days, there were no such things as jels or energy drinks, so I don't use either. I remember when there used to be wet sponges, as well as water stations.
My timetable before races has always been, finish eating 3 hours before race start, and 2 hours finishing drinking. This has worked for me over the years.

Steve water only when I've got a long run in training, with not running for the last 4 months Saturday nights have been a rather different affair 🍻

Oh yeah..the days of no gels, energy drinks (no tech really either!), and sponges! Indeed there were only water stations at officially designated miles--I believe that there were specific rules about them and how often they could be placed. The sponges were often recycled during the event and occasionally grit was an added ingredient!
Good regime there hs.

When (hmm..when being the big question!) I do/if I get up to doing long runs I may do what I used to do and take a couple of biscuits as well as water! Even a jam sandwich--both were what I used in the olden days.
My wife takes money and pops into a shop when she does her longer runs!
Heck, I hadn't realised that you hadn't run for four months FF, that's a long time.
Am I right in remembering that you were piling on the miles at one point shortly before that?
10k this morning, pleasant temperature but nasty wind.

I'd started marathon training Steve when PF struck, then a pulled groin at work. Slowly getting back on it again.

I don't think that I have ever taken food with me whilst running. That's probably because I never run without breakfast. Having said that though, I will be breaking this "rule" on Sunday. One of my running buddies, who is a midwife, is holding a social run, followed by breakfast in her garden, as she has a sponsored London Marathon place, and this will help raise money towards her target.

Well done for your 10k. Hope you didn't have any rain!

Sorry to hear about your injuries FF. I did wonder, as I'd noticed that you had dropped right down the 1,500 mile league table. Good luck with your recovery.

Heavy rain this morning and I ran 7.7 miles on roads with two running buddies. The temperature was definitely much cooler than previous days.

Little easy 5k yesterday and swim today.
Sorry to hear you’ve been injured FF.
I do think a lot of people over fuel these days.

My club still do sponges at our annual 10 miler. 🤣
