I have a daft marathon related target, related to reaching a scarily grown up sounding significant birthday. I am not even sure it is possible... But sub 4hrs is also something I really want to achieve.
Does this make sense? Treadmill running keeps me honest... I can't just plod along... I set a pace and have to stick at it. I am hoping that it will be helpful for tempo runs. My boredom threshold is obviously getting higher as I can now happily use the treadmill for about 40 mins. Getting up to an hour plus (and proving to myself that I can maintain a set pace for that long) would be great.

I'm sure you can extend that time Mrsb. I found the little treadmill running I've done (over winter a couple of years ago) helped me when I was back running on the roads to a more even pace, although pacing does fluctuate it didn't vary by so much. I should use one again to reduce my pace variation again.
Good luck with your aim of sub 4 hours too.

Well I do seem to be on a roll. Another course PB at parkrun this morning, despite feeling a little the worse for wear after a couple of mugs of mulled wine last night! I dreamt last night that I got a Boston qualifying time - was an amazing feeling!

Mrs B., I reckon you ought to be able to get your sub-4hr. Marathon. If you can get a HM at around 1:50 (8:24/ml.), then you should be able to do a 4hr M. (9:09/ml.) fairly easily if you put in the right training. I managed it at my first Marathon (of 2) in 1995 with very little idea of a suitable training plan. I was about 5 days short of my 50th birthday, so not much different age to your good self. But don't pick a mountain marathon!
