For the January round up list I’m going to go with a list relating to the classification of stars. Apologies if it’s a theme that’s been used before but I’m fairly new to the 1,500 thread and I like the idea of describing us as stars so here goes!

For the real highflyers I give you our first category of stars “Supergiants”. A supergiant is the largest known type of star; some are almost as large as our entire solar system. Betelgeuse and Rigel are supergiants. These stars are rare. When supergiants die they supernova and become black holes.

1. Minimag 229
2. roflaherty 223
3. NDWDave 221
4. pielips 186
5. tuck up 180
6. Torey 178
7. Vincey 177
8. CrispByNature 175
9. Pompey Paul 170
10. Exmoor Runner 170

Next in our classification list are the “Blue Giants”. A blue giant is a huge, very hot, blue star. It is a post-main sequence star that burns helium.

11. John Bach 166
12. speedy¬_cuttlefish 165
13. Hills of Death 163
14. Larkim 159
15. Jenny-far-far 155
16. Mrs B 154
17. Wilding2004 152
18. BigEvilC 150
19. minardi 149
20. slowblonde 147

The next group are still well over the break-even point. I give them the classification, “Red Giant”. A red giant is a relatively old star whose diameter is about 100 times bigger than it was originally and had become cooler (the surface temperature is under 6,500 K). They are frequently orange in colour. Betelgeuse is a red giant. It is about 20 times as massive as the Sun about 14,000 times brighter than the Sun, and about 600 light-years from Earth.

21. Podkin 144
22. Werrington Whirlwind 143
23. nme2no1 142
24. annadav 142
25. Richard-M 140
26. jennyh 139
27. Ultracat 138
28. Benny Turbo 136
29. Mascott 136
30. Westmoors 135

For those skirting close or just above the break-even point, I give the classification, “Red Dwarf”. A red dwarf is a small, cool, very faint, main sequence star whose surface temperature is under about 4,000 K. Red dwarfs are the most common type of star. Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf.

32. Peregrinator 134
33. CogNoscenseme AHA 134

34. Ness (i.e. me! 😉) 130

36. oldngrey 128
37. mr d 126
38. mike p 122
39. melbas 120

40. paultopspin 117

And for the final group, who are doing well but are a bit below the break-even point, I give the classification, “Yellow Dwarf”. Yellow dwarfs are small, main sequence stars. The Sun is a yellow dwarf.

Thanks for doing the round up. Decided 1500 for the year would be a better target after not running most of December last year and beginning of this year due to a back injury

Thanks Ness, I'm a bit behind target at the moment but Jan was my highest month since May last year so hopefully moving in the right direction
