I’ve done the opening 3 stages too. I always enjoy the Alpe. Somehow the grind feels more like a running race / session than the way you cyclists race where i automatically get left for dead in the 1st minute!

When I was close to the Tron bike and needing the extra elevation, I found that doing a 70min workout on Road to Sky was perfect: Workout done. Elevation climbed. Sorted.

I did similar before I for the Tron bike. Also went up and down AdZ quite a few times purposefully to get the Meilenstein wheels, although since getting them I’ve never used them. I just ride with Tron, or use a TT bike when I’m doing a Thursday TTT.

When I was getting the tron bike I just climbed the Alpe a lot

I rarely use it , spent most my time on an Orange Tarmac which I do change the wheels on if I really have an effort planned but most of the time it just runs 808s

Even when collecting the XP I rarely did events outside of racing but I was riding so much it didnt matter

I really think of my first day on zwift being the 26th March 2020 but technically I joined around the 20th and did 7 mins

First race – B cat 26th March

First win – 21st April on Watopia Flat

First A cat race 23rd April

Climbed AdZ 12 times in May

First A cat win – 26th May up AdZ (don’t really count this as it was in the Tour for all)

Tron bike – 10th June level 27

First Real A cat win – 1st October on Watopia Flat

Level 40 – Friday 13th November

30th climb of AdZ – 17th November

I'm level 60 now so nothing moves

Finished ToW and completed all the routes in stages 1, 2, 4 and 5 as I was after the XP. Didn’t do all the routes in Stage 3 (the hilly stage). Stage 5 was good to claim extra XP as it had new routes, so also got the new route completion XP.

Zwift Academy starts soon and I’ll do that. Looks to be different to last year, where there were lots of problems initially that weren’t solved for a few days. Looks like there isn’t a mechanism to ride a particular route before ZA, and then ride the same route at the end in order to see if there is any improvement.

My running has been very poor due to injury. But I’m starting the winter on Zwift in a good position for me as I’m in Cat B. Previously I start this time in Cat C, work hard to get into Cat B, but then restart running mainly again in the spring so drop back down in Zwift. But this year I’m starting in a better place on Zwift so we’ll see if I can improve on that.

Good to have an alternative if you’re not running much.

I followed you round at a polite distance this morning Big_G. I quite enjoyed it tbh although in hindsight I should’ve increased the power target for that final 20 mins as I was well above 100 rpm cadence towards the end and it was quite uncomfortable!

WW, ah, that’s funny. I enjoyed it too! At the start of the final 20min effort I thought I was going to struggle, but was pleased I completed it feeling okay. I’m preferring the simpler format this year, and like that it’s 6 weeks compared to last year’s 4.

Just did the new “Accelerate to Elevate” route, which is a new way to get to AdZ. Trouble is I hadn’t twigged that before I started, so when I got to the crossroads to take you to AdZ I was quite surprised (another word may be ‘disappointed’… :) ), when the route took me that way, as I wasn’t expecting it. In hindsight it’s obvious as the elevation is a clear giveaway, but as I say, I hadn’t twigged as I hadn’t read that. Got it done in Z2 though so that’s that route ticked off. Next ride should tip me over level 47 completed. Back along, I was wondering whether I’d get to level 50 this year but I can’t see that happening.

Considering whether to attempt Rapha 500 this year. Anyone done that before, on Zwift or IRL? (500km between 24 Dec and 31 Dec inclusive). If I attempt it it’ll be by far the longest I’ve ridden in that time period, so we’ll see. I expect it’ll be mainly up and down Tempus Fugit on the flat, in Z2, and no racing that week! I think on the face of it it’s about 2hrs a day (very roughly) for me in Z2 on the flat, which on paper it seems doable. Couldn’t do that on Xmas day so I’d need to do more somewhere to make up for that. But a lot of things seem doable on paper and reality can be different I suppose. Partner is working quite a lot between Xmas and New Year so I may have the time. Not much running going on here, so that’s partly why I’m considering it, although I will hopefully trot around a parkrun on Xmas day.

After a few near-misses I managed the Rapha Festive 500 in 2021. All done outside, with a bonus turbo session (I wasn't on Zwift at the time), but I did enough distance IRL. Back when I was racing I'd often get some long rides done at that time, but that was before the 500 existed as a challenge. They used to do cloth badges, and I know of at least one Audaxer who completed it every year for that badge. I think the purists consider it cheating to do it indoors.

If you're going for it, you need to be able to get out at any time the weather's favourable, it can be pretty dreich at that time of the year (In my previous attempt to the successful one, in 2018, I managed two big rides early on, 135k and 123k and then it was miserable for the next 5 or 6 days!)
