Food diaries are good. You can't pretend any more.

I think the biggest problem with weight loss is saying "just this one won't hurt". My mum who could do with losing about 2-stone and has been on diets of some kind all my life, always has a bit of the mega calorie pudding (just to try it cos it would be rude not to) but farts around with miniscule portions for lunch and dinner while we all have proper meals. She likes to think she doesn't eat much but if she wrote it down, she'd be shocked.

hi everyone. I've been lrking around this thread and appreciated the sensible advice offered on it. So from this week I've been keeping a diary of what I eat. I know the next step is recording portion sizes etc too, as I think one of my problems stems from having lived with 6 foot plus guys for many years, so my idea of a 'normal' portion size is proabably quite over estimated...

A food diary sounds like a good idea - I think if I wrote down how much I ate I'd be mortified !

Hi Ruth :)

Food diaries can be tremendously helpful if you're honest and if you accept that you're doing it for yourself rather than to try to persuade the doctor that you're eating like a sparrow and need slimming pills.

Big Al, are you my brother? ;) My mother's family is mostly composed of little round ladies who have tiny little dinners and fill up on "wee biscuits" and "wee bits of pudding" and "aye, I'll just have a wee taste o' that" and "ye wouldnae begrudge me a wee sweetie, would ye?"

I'm going to have another go at eliminating my bedtime dose of chocolate, which is the only glaring anomaly in a diet that's otherwise closer to healthy-eating recommendations than it is to the typical British diet.

I'm already spotting things in my food diary that I didn't think were there - like days when I'm sure I'm being 'good' are shown up to not be quite as good as I thought. Also sometimes my post run snack has turned into more of a small meal, to be followed later by another larger meal. Not pretty reading, but like you say honesty is what it's all about!

The same happened to me, Ruth! I didn't write things down, but I tried to be more aware of what I was eating, and was surprised at just how many of my daytime cups of coffee at work were accompanied by a biscuit or two.

I'm better now at avoiding late night eating than I was before I became "food aware". But last night when I got back from my 21 miler I was family obliged to sit down straight away to a stew dinner. I couldn't have a massive portion as I was only in the door for 10 minutes. But the result was I was ravenous all night. Just kept opening the fridge door and gazing wistfully at the contents. Which unfortunately chiefly consisted of said mum's pudding production and other party left-overs :(

i've eaten better just because of the diary. it's supposed to be a "what I normally eat" diary so I can spot stuff but it's naturally changed to a "eat less" diary!
if I eat like I have then I should lose weight as it's not that bad BUT I know that I have not eaten stuff I would normally have had!

Right so far the diary is showing that when I pay attention to my food it isn't that horrendous but calories in does vary a lot. So I'm going to assume and average over a week .... in order to do this I need to know the best way to work out my calorie requirement (without scientfic testing!) and therefore the amounts to reduce by to lose weight.
I've looked about and seen so many variations from 1200 to 2200 for me to lose weight!
So is there a tried and tested and trusted formular or site please!

Big Al Widepants is trying to lose weight because an article in Runner's World told him he could expect to knock 4 minutes off his half marathon time if he got closer to his ideal weight.
