check them out on web - and local race results - especially if many around your times. Give them a call, pop down one night just to say hi and gauge the welcome.

There will always be someone slower than you. Everybody thinks that they will be too slow when they first go to a club, but any club worth joining will look after noobs and will have groups for all abilities.

There can't *always* be someone slower than you. Someone has to be the slowest

just contact a club, prefereably your nearest
and simply be open with them
tell them quietly that your a complete newbie or what ever you are-
your furthest distance and in what time, and how u feel with it
then ask what they have to offer
the socialising side can or wil come later if you want it to
thery wil appreciate your honesty and put you with a group of your ability
a decent sized club, ,will have expereinced veterans out with newer groups so as they are on hand to deal with advice etc
what you have to understand is- some runners may be preparing for a future race
you can hopefully build on things from there
dont be shy, or embarrassed or scared, its all perfectly natural, and they'll be totaly ready to deal with all of that
they should then tell you if they can accomadate you - and tell you where they stand as a club

Joining a club has taken my times from sub 2hr half and sub 60 10k down to 1hr 42 and 48min 10K over 2 years This is wholely through running with a club. I was improving slowly by myself but this took off after running with others. I joined a non-competitive club and we cater for all speeds on our training night including a jog walk group for beginners. It did take me a least 6 months to get know people in the groups (as not everyone is there each week) before I started to feel part of the club so if you do join one give it some time. For me its great to talk to other runners face to face about running issues and getting support at races. I did struggle for a month or so in the group I was put in as while I did have similar race times i wasn't running 8 miles everyweek at that pace. But stick with it and you'll get better.
