Would I benefit from joining a running club?

Not so lazytoad!
Hi All

I have been running for the last 18 months or so, regular at parkrun which I love. I seem to have got to a point where I dont seem to be getting much better, quicker, longer if you see what I mean. People keep telling me that if I was to run with a club my running would benefit significantly.

Does anyone have experience of this either good or bad?

I'd suggest going along to your local place for an evening or two and seeing. Think it's a pretty personal/local thing really (do you prefer running on your own, in groups, is the club itself run properly etc etc), but from a massively generalised POV, running clubs are good.

I didn't join my local club when I found out the fees were £30 per month. That put me off a bit. I wanted the coaching but wasnt prepared to pay that much to get it.

Equally, as Herman says, it's a very personal thing, and a lot down to whereabouts you live in terms of what clubs are near you. I'm incredibly lucky to be in Bedford and thus haven't escaped the clutches of the Harriers. £20 a year, at least two training sessions a week, club-organised races, support to other big races, a very inclusive beginners' intake once a year, and 8 different ability groups. Yes, we have to share an International Athletics stadium with Beds and County AC, but sometimes you have to take the rough with the smooth...;-)

I would agree with Herman and Stumpy. I have benefited immensely form joining my local club. It is a personal thing but personally I would say yes.

£30 per month SoAPy ???? We only pay £20 per year - and that includes SA membership.

Some are great, some are not so great, some are OK, some are not OK. You won't know until you try and you won't know if it suits you until you go...

Do give a club a couple of goes though, as first night impressions aren't always accurate.

Oh, and what's helped me about the club is that it's great having someone else designing the sessions, motivating you throughout the session, catching up with other club members before, during and after sessions, warming up as a club, and being given the space during illness to gather myself and return to a "lower" ability group and work my way back to my original group.

Crikey £30 a month??

I'm in the same club as Frobester and echo what he says although don't forget the 'optional' track ticket fees to use the stadium. NSL I think that if you want to get quicker then trying out a club is a great idea.
