Also, for anyone with experience of male dogs/cockers. At what age would you recommend neutering. Everyone (including vets) have different ideas. Arlo is 7 months and we seem to waiting until 9 months.

Had a text from Son 2 to say he's got the apprenticeship at the kennels/dog day care centre . He did a couple of trial days there at the end of last week - apparently they had 68 dogs in for day care, so it was a case of monitoring / playing with them in the exercise field, and then collecting and washing them as their owners arrived to collect at the end of the day. He thoroughly enjoyed it and says they appear to be a great group of staff and a very good working atmosphere.

TR that is brilliant! A good work environment is half the battle.
Wondering what people's views are on a situation I came across last week. I met a lady with a puppy a couple of weeks ago - a very cute 11/12 week old cocker spaniel puppy. I met this same lady last week with said puppy but she was running. The pup seemed to be happily trotting along with her but I would have thought it was far too young for running. She must have run 3 miles minimum based on where I met her (twice) on an out and back path.

That’s good news TR
That doesn’t sound good HP. The rough rule of thumb for exercise for puppies is about 5 mins per month of age so at 12 weeks around 15 mins of exercise twice a day. And no proper running until around 1 year old. Their joints are not yet fully formed when they are small.

Too much for a puppy both distance and the running as PenW says. I had Callie doing 2 short loops morning and lunchtime today and even that am worried was too much - about 0.4 miles each time - she was sniffing a lot and out for about 20 mins each time. My previous dog had hip dysplasia/arthritis in his later years and I always wondered if we had exercised him too much as a pup

excellent news TR! Sounds like a great job.
HP - yeah 3 miles running is too much. I have a 6 month old border collie, and even though border collies are bred to run all day, we just do little bursts for a bit of fun, get past some horse poo etc... He probably gets a bit more than the 5 mins per month at weekends, and charges around the garden when he wants to, but we try to limit it, and I won't be doing continuous running with him for a long time

Thats great TR, congrats to him.
Yeah, as tempting as it is to run because of how much energy they have, its not a good idea. (Im part of a few cocker spaniel groups on fb and I've seen a few posts get quite heated about it). I have all the gear ready for when arlo is old enough but won't risk it until he is 1. He definitely gets more than the 5 mins per month but we do try and limit the longer ones and take them steady/on lead if they are.
In other Arlo news, we got the dreaded message from day care. In their words, he is "maturing". It was long and bit blunt with us but had no suggestions of how to solve it and we felt like we were being told off and that he may not be allowed back if it carries on.
