There are general and breed-specific rescue/rehoming charities in most areas who do a great job in finding suitable homes for dogs and in caring for them whilst they find those homes.
This one is in Surrey (note I've just done a google search so this is not a personal recommendation): valgraysbcrescue.org.uk

No advice other than that given above Dio but I do hope Blue finds a good home.

There is an organisation that specialises in rehoming older dogs called The Oldies Club. I think they mainly work with the established centres to rehome older dogs that Battersea and others find become long term residents otherwise but they may be able to advise.

Also is there a breed specific rescue - presumably called Border Collie Rescue (I know lots of breeds do have them). These tend in the experience I have had with other breeds to rehome the dog from the family home rather than have it in kennels so people wanting a dog are on a waiting list and then when one is available the rescue person collects the dog, has him overnight and then he goes to the new owner the following day. It means the dog isn't being taken into kennels for a long period of time which I imagine is even more stressful for an older dog than a younger one.

What BBL said about breed specific rescues.

If it wasn't for the one dog one home I'd risk the divorce and come and fetch him tomorrow.

Best of luck finding a good home,

Thank you all, I’ll pass on all this advice. Rosehip, I’d love you to have him but I understand the complications 😀

Ralph has suddenly gone lame for no obvious reason :( he was fine whilst we were out walking earlier. Walked from his chair to his bed with no problem, but won't go into kitchen for his dinner and now can't/won't put his front right paw dawn. Can't find any issues and he doesn't object to being prodded and rubbed so no idea what's happened :(
Vets in the morning I suppose.

Best wishes for Ralph. Hopefully it will fix itself overnight.
