Wanda's kennels explained to me how dogs think and what they care about to make them happy at the kennels (or anywhere I guess) and they told me it was food, comfort, routine, walks and a bit of human companionship - but the human doesn't necessarily have to be their owners. Of course at the time I didn't believe it, but I have to admit Wanda did come back from there no worse for it.....

And I'm sure they will like if not love Indi and be more than 'tolerant' - who wouldn't be.....

. . . food, comfort, routine, walks and a bit of human companionship - but the human doesn't necessarily have to be their owners . . . this is so true :-)

So dogs... cats... any other approach than sitting them together and feeding one or both of them treats constantly? Also talking to friend last night as my wife says ultimately she would like another dog (not yet) and my friend was saying not for 2 years anyway so puppy can settle down. But how about new cats? (I forgot to ask that) We'd like to have one to replace the hole left by our dear departed tabby... we do still have the tortoiseshell. How are dogs likely to be with new cats... when they're ok but not great with the current one. (the tabby kept her in his place while she was able to).

Sorry don't know the answer but if I was in your situation and wanted a cat I would get one and train the dog to behave in just the same way you train your dog to other daily life situations. I do rewarding good behaviour technique. This is probably easily said but ..... :)

I can offer no help at all... Wanda was rehomed to us as a dog that would not be able to live with a cat and we have seen nothing but very strong evidence to suggest that was true.

D2 - that is very reassuring.

We've had a week away camping which has been interesting. Ernie was very good on site - he wouldn't do his business until we were out of the camping area, he didn't bark or make too much noise, he slept well (albeit on my feet). He was a wee bit unsure about the whole thing but seemed to get used to things. What it has highlighted is - more work needed on loose lead walking (he pulled a lot) and impulse control around livestock. He had been very very good lately but there were some frustrating walks where he couldn't be trusted off lead but was a total pain on the lead.
