Had butternut squash soup with chilli and ginger a little earlier. Oh, and with some bread.

I have a question for the soup god's I've made a basic veg soup If I want to add to it with dried or paste herbs/spices will doing this whilst heating actually make a difference or is the heating time too short? Same with adding things like beans or lentils? I guess cooked chicken/meat is ok as you're heating not cooking that?

Indeed - so much so I’ve just put some on to cook ready for post-late shift later in the week 😁

Most, if not all, of the Indian cooking books I've got talk about dry frying spices before use, to release the flavours. My granny used to talk about cooking "woody" herbs from the beginning and adding "leafy" herbs at the end. Personally, I don't think it makes enough of a difference to worry about. I put spices in early and herbs in late.
Beans and lentils: dried lentils go in early and get fast boiled for 10mins first, other dried pulses I follow the instructions on the packet (soak overnight or whatever). I mostly used tinned beans so they just get thrown in towards the end of cooking.
Pre-cooked meat can go in late too, just enough time to heat it thoroughly through.

I’ve been finding that I’ve been putting too much in the slow cooker - not got used to the family not all being here. We had sausage casserole last week and after we’d eaten all the sausages and as much veg/sauce as we wanted there was loads left - diluted with more stock and whizzed with the blender it made great soup. I’m just about to do the same with a load of leftover root veg from cooking a gammon joint in the slow cooker yesterday.
