Your GPS samples your position every x seconds, so it’s entirely possible that it placed you in the top left-hand corner of the lower square one moment, then in the bottom right-hand of the upper square the next. Add to that the error radius on any GPS reading of up to 10 metres.

I have my watch set to 1 second sampling, so I must just have crossed the diagonal in that time.
