Was not clever enough for doing exams at school bit remember in the 3rd year at Primary school. Mr Hall started and he taught French.

So we had lessons

Just made me remember thinking how old he is now. Hopefully still alive

M et Mme Marsaud et leur enfants. Five years of French, B at O Grade, C at H grade. I was generally near perfect at the oral comprehension tests, but very poor at speaking it.

'Trois bananes!' That's Jean's sœur, Colette, voicing her shock at his banana greed. BBC thing we had. The Dupont famille I think.

Best ever French is Molesworth where the monkeys are naughties and with any luck Papa will leave Armand, sissy straw hat et al, au bord de la mer.

I did GCSE French :-) in 1992, Tricolor books were all the rage, i was rubbish and hated it, and my teacher.

My grade reflected that.

I did GCSE French in 1995. I think I've still got my Tricolore textbooks somewhere.

My French oral exam was a farce. If I wasn't sure of a word in French, I switched to English but pronounced with what I hoped sounded like a French accent.

I found German a lot easier to get to grips with.

Have you ever seen Miles Kington (sadly RIP now) and McGoohan in the same room at the same time?

About This Thread

It was a staple of my O-levels that we would be presented with six drawings telling a simple story. We then had to write that story in our best French. We were told it was a genuine part of education in France; the way French was taught in France.

I thought it was an excellent approach as everyone could write at their own level. You could play safe, or you could demonstrate your imperfect understanding of unlikely tenses.

But what was it called, please? Why did it go out of fashion? Is it ...
