Just watched two different Joy Division specialist rounds on YT. Six right in each. Only one duplicate question. By coincidence, I was today about fifty metres from where I saw New Order live, around Blue Monday time. (Which almost featured in the first blog I wrote on Fetch, except I never actually wrote the blog. It was going to be titled "Touching From A Distance") Anyway, I digress. Possibly because I don't know what I would choose. The videos did confirm something though: the questions on specialist subjects have become markedly more long-winded, thus reducing the maximum you can score in that round. |

The videos did confirm something though: the questions on specialist subjects have become markedly more long-winded, thus reducing the maximum you can score in that round. My theory on this is that they have started to put clues to the answer in the question, which makes the question longer. This isn't a real example, but it illustrates what I mean. Once upon a time, a question might have been: "What city is the state capital of Alabama?". Now they would ask: "What city, which shares its name with a British general who led the Eighth Army in North Africa in the Second World War, is the state capital of Alabama?". It makes some of the questions sound more like mildly cryptic crossword clues, but in fact it is just making the answer easier to identify. |

Ah, yes, that's very true. The totals are much lower than I remember from a few years ago. And has the general knowledge round always been two and a half minutes? I thought both rounds were originally 2 minutes but my OH doesn't agree. |

I'm sure that they used to be 2 and 2 also (1:30 and 2 in the Clive Anderson version, which i very rarely watched.)

I've always presumed the question word count is beefed up to ensure that all respondents get the same amount of questions asked in the same period of time. So some "easy to ask" questions get bulked out just as filler.

According to UK Gameshows, the general knowledge round gained thirty seconds from the 2010-11 series onwards. ukgameshows.com There is also a picture captioned as being from halfway through the 1990 final. The five scores are displayed: 15, 16, 18, 20, 12. |

Found an ace one - King Áed The Chronicle of the Kings of Alba says of Áed: "Áed held the kingdom for one year. The shortness of his reign has bequeathed nothing memorable to history. He was slain in the civitas of Nrurim." Only problem might be that they run out of questions |
