In France, Père Noël (Father Xmas) has a small companion called Père Fouettard.
Père Fouettard is Santa’s little helper, but not one you’d ever want to visit. In some French traditions, he’s depicted as spanking children who have been bad that year, while Santa gets on with delivering gifts to the good ones. Père Fouettard actually translates to Father Whipper too, so the clue is in the name.
