The term RICE (Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation.) was coined by Harvard Physician Dr Gabe Mirkin, as the recommended treatment for sports injuries in his landmark ‘The Sports Medicine Book.’
He retracted it in 2013 saying “Subsequent research shows that ice can actually delay recovery. Mild movement helps tissue to heal faster, and the application of cold suppresses the immune responses that start and hasten recovery.”

The words stiff-necked and hard-hearted entered our language because early translators of the Hebrew Bible chose to copy them. But they didn't copy long-nosed, which means merciful.

[interesting. I had wondered whether Welsh styfnig meaning stubborn had some connection with stiff-necked, but it seems not.]

The RICE comment is very interesting. I remember asking on this site many moons ago why ice helped, given that it stopped the blood flow and (AFAIA) it's the blood flowing that helps recovery.

The answer i got was that the ice stopped further damage, but that seemed odd to me as I would have thought that the 'damage' was already done during the exercise.

That is interesting. I have never favoured ice for an injury, but prefer a warm bath to ease pain and stiffness and generally just relax. I have tried alternating ice and heat on an Achilles injury on advice from a physio, but had no real improvement over just resting it for a while, before starting rehab exercises.

Also never a RICE enthusiast. It still gets thrown around as indiscriminate advice when the actual best-practice management has multiple variables which may or may not include one or more elements of RICE. [I was aware of Dr Mirkin's retraction though I'd forgotten his name.]
