Fried slices of tofu are sort of like halloumi, but are too beany and not salty enough. I used to like thin fried strips of smoked tofu with a few fried mushrooms in a "bacon style" butty.

Surely taste would depend on the marinade. Although I think a truck load of salt would be needed if it was to be as salty as halloumi. 1.5 tablespoons of salt in this one. I don't think I could do it. beingvegan.co.uk

Lots of interesting stuff about brining tofu; that might work?

You have to cook halloumi surely? I can't imagine eating it without cooking it. Lots of different vegan 'halloumi' recipes online and also some for vegan 'bacon'.

Local vegan cafe in Truro does smoked tofu as a very convincing (to someone who hasn't eaten bacon in 28 years) bacon imitation on a TLT sandwich, and jackfruit as pulled pork!

Just in case anyone is interested Holland and Barrett have a buy one get one half price offer online - I've just stocked up on Spatone and kg tubs of Meridian peanut butter. Delivery is free if you spend over £20 too.

Liked Alpro soya yoghurt. Had nice lunch of veggie bake that MrsS(rrr) made yesterday cold plus tomatoes and bits o cheese. And bought gubbins for a veggie bolognese (with Quorn mince, which I really like). Keep it going Veg Runners! :-) G

I once made the mistake of buying fresh jackfruit and hacking into it, not realising that it is tough to cut, has big stones embedded and it oozes some latex sap that is very sticky. It took ages to get the flesh out. Was nice once I had cooked it but it's far easier if someone else does the cooking.

I made quorn mince Bolognese. This is noteworthy cos I never cook. But there are so few tasty veggie ready meals in my local shops that I've been forced to! Onion, red and green peppers, mushrooms tin of chopped toms, a ready made Bolognese tomato sauce, dash of Worcester sauce (my son's suggestion!), frozen quorn mince. I made so much that I've had pasta Bolognese for two (MrsS(rrr) liked it), mince and tatties, another pasta Bolognese and I've still got one night's dinner left. Magic! And it tasted nice. Bonus! I like quorn mince texture - less chewy than minced animal. :-) G
