Vegetarian Runners - Any tips?

Yep chopped up and lightly mashed, with just bit of lime juice and a dash of (good quality) olive oil is very common in my house, or you can go to town with other things such as ginger, dill, chilli flakes (all at the same time too), you name it. It stands a lot of additions.

Was at a hotel last week in the West country (as opposed to Cornwall which is like a different country), and ordered avocado on toast. Was thinking ooh what nice things might they add I hadn't thought to try. They served sliced avocado on barely buttered toast. I almost sent it back, but could imagine the conversation - "What's wrong with this avocado on toast"..."well it's just avocado on toast"... "and...?"

Lol at Nellers not having eaten avocado and that being "working class"!

I love avocado. I remember being offered it when younger and thinking "eww, slimy texture, funny bitter taste" etc. Now seems smooth, creamy delish. I'd have it with anything - just on salad, yes on toast, with cheese, with pasta anything really.

As everyone says really hard to tell if they are going to be right ripeness - I think soft to touch in shop and eat immediately. I've rarely got hard ones to ripen well at home.

My dabble with non-dairy isn't going great. Like soya and almond milk. Tried some dairy free "cheese" Sainsbury's free from range. Was OK, if you don't think of it as cheese!

Some milk MrsS(rrr) bought (Arla, from Leeds?) said cows out on pasture, organic, free range etc. That seemed good. I'm def going to try the Ahimsa milk and cheese products too.

Thanks re duck and geese jacdaw. Shall avoid! May end up with just some hens then. Err, scuse ignorance but presumably if you're breeding them you don't need cockerel?! :-) G

To rear chicks you'll need a cockerel or some fertile eggs from elsewhere. Then you will have a cockerel.

What I mean is, I don't want one! Do hens lay anyway? I really need to go and read a book about the birds and the bees, don't I?! :-) G

HappyG the vegan cheeses have got a lot better but, yes, it's best to think of them as a different product. There is a substance in cheese made from animal milk that is addictive and can't be replicated. I generally advise new vegans to go cold turkey then try vegan cheese after a while.

The eggs that hens lay are unfertilised. You would need to borrow a cockerel if you wanted eggs that were laid to contain chicks.

Yes they lay without a cockerel. And they get to keep the feathers on their backs.

Half an avacado mashed with scrambled egg on granary toast for breakfast this morning. It was alright. I'm not sure it was good enough that I'll bother often.
