An ultra question... I like to wear quite minimal shoes, but I find that if I have to do a lot of walking in an ultra, especially on tarmac or trail with a good surface, my shins and toe joints hurt. I'm fine if I can keep running. I assume it is to do with the different gait, walking v running.

Anybody else find this happens? Any solutions?

I'm not a Hoka fan.

Sorry jac - I started pretty minimal (Inov-8 F-lite 195 and 220 - like slippers) and the rocks and roots and stones of the West Highland Way meant that my toes got battered to bits. Hokas were my compromise - i.e. great sole, toes and foot protection generally, but not too much heel, so heel to toe drop was closer to flat shoes that I was used to.

A by-product of Hokas was that I had much less general foot, ankle, knee pain. Still got tired muscles, back, hips etc. as you say, possibly to do with walking and very slow, ploddy running.

Hope you find a solution. :-) G

Thanks HappyG.

I need a shoe for the second half of the lakeland 100, which may involve a fair bit of walking. I don't think I have time to get used to Hokas, and they are a bit narrow.

The problem only seems to happen when my form falls apart or I'm walking. Maybe I need to train more!

My twin brother lives in Sydney and although he doesn't run walks good distances on the (concrete or tarnac) coastal path. He bought Hokas recently but last time I checked hasn't tried them due to recent stormy weather. I'm not sure how much protection there is in the Inov-8 ultras or NB leadville but they are options

Jackdaw - yes, I used to suffer quite a bit, but I've found that actually thinking about walking form the same way I do running form makes a lot of difference: posture, engaged core, not over-striding etc.

I seem to recall you're an inov-8 wearer. I find that x-talon 212s are my ideal ultra shoe, and have worn them for all my hundreds. I did buy a pair of the race ultra 290s but never really got one with them. I do find however they're quite a good walking shoe, and I suspect that the RU 270s (which are a bit more minimal & less 'clumpy') might do you quite nicely for the second half of the L100. They size smaller than most inov-8s, so I'd go up at least half a size if not a full size, especially for the second half of the race when your feet will likely be swollen.

Enjoy the race. I'm really missing not being there for the first time in 8 years :(

Thanks Flanker. Interesting thoughts, especially about walking gait / form.

I might look at the race ultras. They always seem too stiff in the sole for me, but I'm almost certainly thinking from a light footed running perspective and not an exhausted plodding perspective.

The first half will be in talons; just need to decide which ones; 212s or 200s.

I'm an Inov-8 fan, particularly Roc-lites but I've not got on with the Ultra-290s at all. As flanker says they are smaller made than other models, and they have shredded my heels on a number of occasions so ironically I only use them for shorter runs

I get heel shredding with roclites... will need to go carefully with the ultra 290s.
