Kinky also has had her heals shredded buy them - a pair she'd done long runs in before - and now that you mention it I suffered a bit with sore heels. I think the heel cup is low and rubs on the achilles.

I also suffered with not being able to lock my foot in properly due to the low heel and therefore had to tie them really tightly.

I think the 270s may be a bit more flexible than the 290s, which are quite rigid

The one thing I find they are good at is sticking to wet rock. I suppose down to the large surface area of sticky rubber. Unfortunately because they are so big, wide soles accurate foot placement while scrambling is poor which often negates this.

Ironically I also largely use them for short recovery runs after hard events, when I quite like the support they offer. I did use them in Perth for the ACP 50k option and they were good for a day of running around a 1.5 mile concrete loop. They are far better as road shoes than trail shoes :-D

Not tried the NB Leadville, but I'm currently using the NB 910v2 trail shoe and really liking them. 8mm drop, rockplate under forefoot, plenty room in forefoot and nice cushioning.
Did a very rocky 32 mile circuit in the Cairngorms in them last week and feet were not in the slightest bit sore or tired after.
Agree with others that the Inov8 RU 290 is not that great - I don't get any heel problems, but just find them a bit "clumpy" and not very flexible.

For those that like Inov8 then they're introducing a new range of trail shoes later this year called Trail Talon - with a 250 ( 4mm drop ), 275 ( 8mm drop ) and Goretex ( think it's the 8mm one )

I am a Leadville fan, I wore them for the Lakeland 50 last year, CCC and a few other ultras. They have superb cushioning and great protection, sole is vibram and v. grippy in the dry, it's the wet they're terrible. DT, I wonder if you would get on with them? They're a very wide fit (that's why I tried them in the first place).

I'm also an X-talon fan - both for protection of toes and sole, and for grip, and lightness. However, Hoka for 95 miles and rocks served me well (and better than any Inov-8). As an example, the Hoka doesn't "bend", so no rubbing at the toe etc. But that's probably just my foot shape and/or movement. G'luck. :-) G

I'm about half a dozen posts too late, but interested to read people's experiences of the Raceultras. For last year's Chiltern Way ultra I ran the first 70 miles in Roclites, then switched to Raceultras for the next 63, where they promptly wore a hole in one of my heels. Took the same approach for this year's GUCR, swapping over at 115 miles - but took much more care of the lacing and didn't experience any problems, and found the extra cushioning helped as my running form disappeared and there was a higher proportion of walking.

I know that people hate them but for long distance the Hoka's are perfect (for me). When I see others with shredded feet after only thirty miles I know I've made the right choice (for me). No blisters no shredding.
