From experience, with the exception of the Highland Fling, which is idiot proof navigation wise I think a recce is a very good idea.

Personal view - I tend not to recce the course (unless it's very close) as I quite enjoy navigation, and for me it is part of the event (and I find it takes my mind off running). Also, I don't have a GPS device, so rely on paper OS maps (and I like that with maps you get to see the 'bigger picture').

I reckon the L2C will be very well marked - so you shouldn't need to worry too much. However... if you are going to feel more comfortable doing the race, and hence enjoy it more, having recced some or all of it, and/or having some navigation backup, then a recce and GPS would be a good idea.

I'm like Ed. Apart from the BG I've never reccied anything. I'm a paper map man too and don't even wear a watch most of the time. Recceing is a good idea I think to get a feel for "the lie of the land" if your upcoming event is in an unfamiliar area

I'm with Ed & DT. I enjoy the challenge of the nav as part of the event. I also enjoy seeing the fast boys at the front run past me several times when they've all missed a turn, hared off in the wrong direction, and then had to come back ;-)

I will often have the route on my garmin as a backup too.

Given the amount of grief I used to get form the local while training around Lea Valley I'd expect the signage to be tampered with. It the only place I've ever run where I've had two McD's meals thrown at me out of a moving car. What a waste of food.

did you catch it and eat it flanker? I kind of wimped out today and did a tame chunk to work out where a few river crossings were (I'd seen people go off-piste on the Thames Path at river crossings and have to be called back - luckily for me each time it happened I was on the right side of seeing which way was the right way). The first one on my route today I knew where it was meant to happen but had no clue as to how to actually get to the right bit so wandered for a couple of minutes working it out - the others were by noticable pubs and v clear. I'm slightly freaked out by the idea of night running across fields where there won't really be any signage or landmarks . . . and it was only brought to my attention yesterday that moths, gnats etc are going to love my light!

at least they're not Scottish midges!

I regularly used to find myself on the wrong side of the river, or even on the wrong branch of the river where I'd got a crossing wrong, when I used work/train around there.

It should be a nice run. Almost wish I was going it as I could train to the start then run home :-) But not at £175 :-o

It was a fair bit less than that as a previous entry, early bird Flanker - but not inexpensive - but works out cheaper than adding lots of travel and/or hotel etc.

the dark fields bit doesn't worry me Mulbs - but I wouldn't want to be doing it in the opposite direction

so long as we don't run into a bog of doom we'll be alright :-)
flanker - I'm glad that someone else found it confusing at least once in their lives!

Re: recceies I'm ony first and have been recceing it. It will reduce thinking time a bit, but I'll still carry paper map (in chopped sections) & compass, plus event gives a3 sized routecard anyway as backup.
