The thing that really boils my piss about ironman is that the business model relies on a massive volunteer program to put the events on. Volunteering to help the private equity fund to achieve its return on capital hurdle rates. Without all that unpaid labour the high gross profit margins would be eroded and reduce the dividends to our billionaire owners. Many smaller races have a decent rewards program for those who want to fund their races via volunteer spots whereas ironman gives you a tshirt and some hot food for a day of work. I feel ironman is taking the piss and taking volunteers away from races which could actually do with them - it is a finite resource |

Get your drift, and tend to agree, but nobody is forcing them and I expect they'd do it for nothing because they enjoy it and supporting their fellow competitors.

Ironically ... the first thing I'd have to shell out for is a handheld gps with mapping... I already know where I can borrow one of those from (although I might need to buy some more maps for it). The problem would be working out how to use it so I could demo it at kit check |
