I usually get around 100s without needing to enter the main compartment of my pack as I can get everything I need into the front/side pockets (unless I need w/p trousers).

I think last time out I managed to get all my Fellsman kit into my 12l Montane, but the forecast wasn't too bad so I swapped my usual Fellsman attrire of Paramo Velez for a light weight jacket and managed to get a very lightweight micro-fleece through kit check.

The one thing I tend to add to kit lists if the weather is looking dodgy is a lightweigt synthetic insulating layer, such as the original inov-8 thermoshell or OMM Rotor. Throw it on over anything, wet or dry, and you'll be far warmer and happier very quickly.

I always add an extra top in addition to the kit list. I sweat buckets so then chill the instant I stop. Nice. Map n Compass Whistle Mug! paulcook - wonder if we have the same friends?

Oh yes, I have a collapsible plastic mug - again for space-saving reasons - though don't always carry it. Not certain I've really used it especially for hot stuff to vouch for how good it actually is.

Tim from Swaledale was who I was referring to re: Fellsman, though I suspect I'd recognise most of those who do the NYM fell series races regularly enough to smile and say hello to, even if I haven't got a clue who some of them are.

Every year while watching the Winter Spine the same question comes to mind: how do they keep their electronics, especially head torches, charged?

My petzl takes about 6 hours for a full charge, and with the lack of winter daylight I'd probably get through a full battery, and maybe more, each night, even with the lumens dialled down.

The people out there for 7 nights can't be expected to purchase 7-10 spare batteries, can they? With modern torches that's probably £500.

One answer would be to use a torch that takes AAs and carry a load, but looking at the pictures many of them are using Petzl Swifts & Naos that don't.

I think they charge them at the CPs flanker - those that need the most battery power would be those who spend longest resting/eating I should think

I have wondered that. My Petzl would possibly scrape through 1.5 - 2 nights on a full charge, but like Flanker says takes an age to re-charge.

They maybe have two, one in use and one attached to a power-bank in their pack?

I'd not have anywhere near enough time in the CPs to recharge them.

Recharing in the pack seems a reasonable answer, but not the most reliable one! I'd think that would mean a minimum of 3 batteries - 1 in use, one charging, and a spare (porbably whole torch) in case the charging failed. From what i recall of the kit list there's no stipulation on there about number of batteries etc.

Kit list is "head torch ... minimum 100 lumens ... with spare batteries or back-up head torch"

I used to be in the same club as Gwynn Stokes who came 3rd/4th two or else three years running. I think, though can't fully recall, he had both spare batteries and extra head torch. Generally, he tried to have as light a full kit as possible to try save time, though admitted it might come at the cost of a speedy DNF or worse if the weather was truly awful.

Running a night time ultra in the hills (eg Fellsman or LL100) with only a single headtorch is possibly about as stupid as you can get in my book. Two headtorches and spare batteries for both (many lensers for instance will take rechargeable batteries that weight next to nothing). With no light your race and potentially you are dead. Forget the power pack for your phone (there's your weight saving for your extra torch). Put the phone on power save, bury it at the bottom of your sac and forget about it. You're there to run not take photos or send messages.

I suspect some put stuff on charge from power packs in their drop bags (protected in a plastic box with padding that would work) but what you've really illustrated is that to do the Spine with adequate kit makes the entry fee insignificant 😉
