The Beachy Head Marathon is running an Ultra this year by adding on the 10K route to the usual Marathon - £70 beachyheadmarathon.eventrac.co.uk

£70 for a 50k seems rather steep to me

I suppose it depends on the event, I normally pay around £25-35 for marathons but asked hubby to buy me an entry to Brighton this year which was £75. Infact a local 100km (the SVP) was around £70 last year I think! Trouble is people will pay that!

What I’m trying to say in my awkward way is people will pay high prices, there’s no shortage of people queuing up to do Beachy Head every year!

I’ve commented the last few races I’ve done (local short fell races not ultras) the numbers seem to be way down. Sometimes half what they were before. And that’s at £6 to enter. I couldn’t say why or whether I’m correct. But £70 might be really starting to price people out. |

That would pay for about a mile of the highland kings - and maybe a salmon mousse

You wouldn’t get a 10k or 5 miler for less than £10 here!

The bigger races can charge pretty much what they want these days. Hackney Half is £49 (plus admin fee) and the ASICS 10k is £40. I paid £70 for the early bird price for London Ultra 55k coming up in October. |

I have less knowledge/experience than many on here but £70 for 50k looks to be within the ballpark I'm coming to expect (high end of the range, I concede, but not outlandishly so). All race organisers have a huge challenge just now - faced with both rising costs and reduced demand - to break even so pitching an entry fee at a level that is sustainable is really difficult. That fee, in itself, wouldn't put me off running the event - in my case, the far greater challenge (for Beachy) would be the time and cost associated with getting to the other end of the country and finding somewhere to stay for the weekend. |
