My understanding is that the infection element comes from reusing contacts after swimming, as you can't clean the nasty stuff off with normal lens cleaner, so if they're disposables, particularly under googles, you should actually be at less risk than swimming with naked eyeballs because you'll throw the bacterial away with the lenses. I may just want that to be true, though, and have fudged the details to support my belief. |

Thanks all! I wear monthly disposable contacts so maybe the solution is to wear an older set / time my changeover and throw them away afterwards... I wasn't sure about the exact nature of the risk but if it is around reusing them after then that's a great help and reassuring, thank you |

<<delurks>> - Clare - I use monthly lenses but just get some daily disposables for swimming/going in the sea whilst on holiday etc. As far as the water/bacteria thing is concerned you're not even supposed to wear them in the shower so I think the risk is low though the consequences can be very bad.

Before my laser surgery I wore contact lenses; kept them in for everything I wasn't supposed to (even decontam drills in the CS Gas facility ) and was very fortunate to get away totally unscathed. As I got older and "wiser" I switched to daily disposable lenses and sometimes I even disposed of them after a day! Had laser surgery about a dozen or so years ago and never looked back, as it were Just recently I've been noticing the signs of old age creeping up on me. Am considering buying a selfie-stick just so I can hold my phone at a good focal length!! My optician says I'm lucky because I've got an eye which is better at distance vison and the other is better for close-up work; my brain adjusts for me and I rarely notice. If it was me, I'd buy some daily disposables in the correct prescription and wear them for the whole event. I think it's riskier to try putting them in during T1 due to potential for getting dirt in your eye. |

Angus - my wife's eyes are like that, she tells me that it just means her eye sight is shit. Her brain isn't coping so well:-)

I’m the same. Computer work gives me a headache though, so I wear glasses. Wear them when running to protect my eyes.
