Oddly enough I was thinking about this as I swam last night. Never has front crawl been more accurately named than when I do it, 'crawl' being the fastest speed I achieve.
A friend who's a swimming teacher (of small children currently, but she's taught adults too) swam behind me one day in the lake and said that I 'swam like a typical runner' in that my feet are too far apart. So I try and concentrate on keeping my big toes close together and just gently 'waft' my legs up and down (again, my friend said I should think about shaking a sock off my foot.)
My problem is, when I'm busy thinking about my legs, my arm work becomes even more pathetic. I'm just not a very good swimmer  but I do like swimming.

This drill I used to do to make my kick useful for keeping legs up (even if still useless for propulsion).
I used to push off from the side, stretch out - when my legs started to drop I’d work out how to kick to get them up and keep them up.
Also helps to keep your body balanced since a lot of keeping legs up comes from this. Eventually I could keep my legs up with body balance and only the tiniest kick.
Once I’d sussed this I’d start each length getting the body balanced and leg kick to keep legs up and gently add the rest of the stroke.

I think I say a variation of this every time, but this time I really meant it: by gosh that was unpleasant. I had proper bonk there at the end of that last sprint. I went all wibbly and had to dismount for a second.
Looking forward to next week already :D

I got a bit of the way into JC's comment but VS to me says either Very Small or Very Slowly but that doesn't make sense with my interpretation of QFFM. Two glasses of wine may be befuddling my VS brain though.
