I think it's from the hip at least that's what we tell the small triathletes to do. And your big toes just almost brushing each other. Rotation relevant? Practice just kicking with a float? I don't kick a lot, esp in wetsuit as I have enough "natural bouyancy" that it's like having a permanent poolbouy... just at the end to get the blood flowing as Pix said.
I find I need a gentle small kick for stability swimming skins. I was watching olympic swimmers the other day and they look like they have outboards. Is there OW swimming in this time? My own swim technique is a bit of a disaster, no lessons or drills or anything for yonks, so still practising things I was told 2 years ago, any improvement has been core / upperbody rather than technique. Hope we get club sessions this winter - I think they help me.

Plantar flexion is really important. Which is pointing your foot like a highland dancer (or Roy of the Rovers scoring a goal). If your foot remains at right angles to your leg you effectively push water forwards off the top of your foot and thus swim backwards.

Core control, kick from hip. Soft knee but not too flexi so that you end up kicking from it

Remember that kick only adds something like 10% of power but can detract more if done wrong. As JC says, it’s good for balance and to assist rotation.

Thank you. The one time in recent memory I did kick only I stayed stationary.
