Lunchtime pursuit. Legs pretty decent, but a sad indictment of my lack of ability in this form of cycling - steady in the group for 2 laps, missed the break in lap 3, TT'd a group of 5 back to the breakaway so 8 of us contested the sprint. I was 8th.

Lol TRO you have my sprint skills
Had you swim before doing 8.5 hrs Sweetie
I hate sounding like voice of reason but I don't think the window is enough and leaves you 0 Margin for error.
Your 8.40 assumess the swim goes to plan as well . Any water delay and that window shrinks yes ?

The voice of reason is a good thing Gobi, that's why I threw the dilemma out there to get as wide a viewpoint as possible before making a decision.
What I have noticed though is that the more reason you throw at it, the more determined I feel to do it - must just be my contrary nature!
I already built a buffer to the swim and T1 - so aiming for 1:25 swim and 15 mins T1 would give me 8:50 for the bike, but I can't count on that on the day, a rough sea would wipe that out, so I thought safer to assume 8:40. So you're absolutely right there is no real margin for error.
If I'd not done the training then I would not hesitate to defer but I really have worked hard this year, I am the fittest I've ever been - so it is really hard to have done all that, defer and have nothing to show for it.

I've done 2 Long course and 3 Ironman wales swims on that course.
2 days were perfect, 1 choppy but not really slower, 1 a decent but predictable swell but time lost was not huge, about 3-5 mins maybe and 1 was an apocalyptic rogue sea monstrosity which even locals thought was one of the worst they'd seen and resulted in more DNF's on the swim alone than usual for the while Ironman. I was about 15 minutes slower, as were most. More times you sea swim, the better you can 'deal' with chop swell etc and minimise risk from the swim leg.
Your odds are pretty decent for a reasonable swim, especially with the summer we're having....

It is however amazing really though as 99% of people think you should do it and none of them make your contrary nature not want to take part:-)
The reality is you want to do it so therefore you will race

Blimey. Coach PoD is trying the double reverse psychology approach.
