Many thanks for all the comments, everyone seems to be leaning towards the 'Go for it' option don't they?!
I also liked ChrisHBs comment, I think that may be a significant factor in swaying me.

thing is sweetie, how bad will it be for you if you don't make the cut-off ? I failed in my first attempt at IM Mallorca (got heat exhaustion and collapsed in T2) and I was gutted, and embarrassed and so cross with myself, I did hurt (mentally) for a long time, but it made me *more* determined for next time.

I'm not a bandwagon sort of a guy so I shall ask a question Sweetie
Does anything in your training say you can make 8hrs 40 ? Wales is hard there is no escaping that fact.
If yes then by all means go for it BUT if training indicates it is unlikely then i shall smoothly say Defer and give yourself the time to train properly.
Sorry the attitude of where is the challenge when you know you can do it is negated by mathematics if the training paces and any testing says you can't then you won't.
Sorry to be the killjoy but the coach in me only believes in numbers and logic.

Based on training rides I'm bang on for 8.40 at the moment (based on 3 x 100 milers over similar hilly terrain) - and I have cycled the Tenby course before so I know what I'm letting myself in for *gulp* My legs are really tired at the moment, so I am thinking that with a good 3 week taper I can probably do 8.30 - In an ideal world I would just like a bigger window than that, as you never know what will happen on the day.

You've still got three weeks of training until your three week taper...
Though you might want to have a week now and then two weeks right before

Fraggle - I am sure I'll be absolutely crushed if I don't make the cut-off, ironman has been at the forefront of everything I've done over the last 10 months, so it will be a big mental hit - that is the fear.
But I think you rightly say, a failure will potentially make me more determined for 2019 - more so than if I defer.
