As for me, I ran the Wargrave 10k yesterday. The Central Governor kicked in perhaps as early as 2k and by 5k I was jogging it in. Somewhat unsurprisingly, you can’t run as little as I have as late and expect to run 10k well. I wonder if it’s actually the most demanding (sub mara) distance to run?

I was embarrassed tbh and left the event quickly in some shame. Thankfully by this morning I realise how ridiculous that was. 3 months ago I still thought I’d never run again. It’s incredible how quickly perspective can change. I got ahead of myself and need to remember to be thankful for what I have rather than what I don’t. I can do that with everything else in life. Why is running so complex?!

Anyway, I’m glad I wrote all that down even if you lot weren’t 😂

That is the world of running in a nutshell Wool.

At bad times we wish for something meagre, like just being able to plod a short run out. Yet we very quickly forget what we'd have settled for and want more again!

That Wargrave race doesn't look the quickest anyway and a measure against in form high mileage is always going to come up harsh.
5ks you can probably get a lot closer to your old usual on the lower miles.

The important thing is keeping a sustainable level and I hope you're finding what you're doing is just that and for years to come.

Condolences PMJ.

If we're making excuses for running form then this is mine! I've not quite learnt where things are in this place but always appreciated there's a good level of in-built geekery.

Windsor Wool, the move is exciting. We have 4 grown-up kids who are all relatively far away (by UK standards, on the doorstep for the US) and the move will put us close to 2. Also moving from near London to the countryside means a lot more house and lovely views. I am on 99 parkruns at Black Park so I'll do another pacing day and hit 100.

The big issue with slow is, as you say, that it is all relative. I feel I am missing a chunk at the top end: as soon as I hit a slope it gets hard and same for when I want to go fast.

The move is pre-retirement. I plan on working as long as my managers don't piss me off. I am lucky that I enjoy what I do and don't need the money (no mortgage, kids all grown up, pension pot compounded well over 35+ years) so as long as it is enjoyable and I'm not needed to care for anyone I'll carry on as the mental stimulation is good.

The move was always supposed to be Devon or Cornwall but they are a long drive to visit family which has moved in the opposite direction.

Evening all. Just checking in.

WW - Wargrave is a tough course if you're in good shape. Different ball game again if you're not. I hope to be where you are in the not too distant future (having moved from being thankful to being able to do anything to being annoyed with a race).

PMJ - that sounds like quite a lot on your plate. Condolences, and hopefully everything settles down asap for you.

SG - good turnout/report for Penn 7.

Jooligan - you went through a very rough patch so I've enjoyed seeing you return to form over the last while. It's almost as if Newport blasted the last of it out of your system.

Been a crap few days here. Probably a combo of Father's Day and the imminent HM Jr and I are running in my Dad's memory bringing things to a head, but also my body has continued to be very definitely out of sorts - every run has been pretty painful (sharp pains through my quads, and all over heavy feeling), and today's 8m jog was no better. Only 30m last week too as I had to take a few days off when it got too much.

Thankfully I finally got a call from a specialist last week and am booked in for an exploratory procedure tomorrow (she got very annoyed that my case was left in a pile instead of being dealt with as she felt I should have been seen when things were at their worst). Fingers crossed they find something a) easily fixable), and b) that explains why I've felt so rubbish on most runs over the last few months.

Also on the plus side Jr and I are probably going to run the HM together as a training run, which will be nice as depending on which uni he ends up at opportunities to run together will be few and far between.

I think that 10k is OK if you train specifically for it but I agree that it hurts if you roll up in the middle of training for a marathon or 5k.

That's exactly my feeling philip_m_jones No ability to run fast at all & absolutely pants on hills. It was the latter which alerted me that something was amiss before testing positive on my 3rd Covid bout in Nov'22 as previously hills were my forte. It's since then that I've been struggling but it has improved recently though and I've noticed a gradual improvement on my bike commute too. I'm recovering quicker too so that runs are generally less painful. Previously even an easy hour would give me joint & muscle pain for 24-48 hrs. Take heart that it will pass.
7 miles today along the canal. it was meant to be an easy 10K but I pushed for 800m to try & beat the cruise boat to the swing bridge which I did comfortably however the guy on duty had closed the barriers stupidly early so I had to tack on an extra K & still lost a couple of minutes waiting. Was a bit late back to work - oops!

Great to see you running again at all Windsor Wool as not so long ago you were consigning yourself to the endless tedium of the pool (almost). The fact you feel confident enough to attempt a race is smashing news.

Hi there - this thread started in 2010 over on RW and started as an improvement thread for myself under Moraghan's coaching, through to more of a general collaboration tool and place to share training and long winded race reports.

Thanks to the fetch community for allowing us to move over, and we'd welcome loads of new contributors adding to the thread, as we were definitely running on empty with a small bunch of posters near the end!
