Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Is that suggesting the numbers are declining?

It is a bit like the cruise ships, lots of people in confined spaces it’s going to go through rapidly. It’s the transference to the outside community that is a worry. Coming through Durham on Sunday there was big crowds of students I get they may be in a bubble but to other non students it looked like it was all ok to gather.

A friend overheard a lad taking to his mates the other day saying they’d go to Durham For a few pints as they are not challenging anyone and if they do just say you’re a student. 😩

As you see, all socially distanced, masked and no chairs. Also no freshers as they have stayed away. Its a bit lacking in atmosphere!

I think it is a facet of testing, i.e. when it became apparent it was in halls, and homes, people got tested, so the numbers shot up..also some 4,000 are now self isolating that is 10% of the student population...that could be a factor in the dip. However I think the numbers will fluctuate up and down between now and say Feb......that's how season flu works across the autumn/winter seasons.

I have no idea in general what the students get up to (ok I do :-) ), but I do know my runners are having virtual beers tonight via zoom, good on them.

Just seen this BBC
People "who are at minimal risk of death" to Covid-19 should be allowed to return to normal life, an international group of infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists has said.

Nearly 6,000 scientists and health experts, including dozens from the UK, have joined a movement - known as the Great Barrington Declaration - warning of "grave concerns" around lockdown policies.

They say young and low-risk individuals should be allowed to work normally, and schools and universities should be open for in-person teaching.

They call for efforts to "to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk".

Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health, the declaration warns.

"Keeping these measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage."

While there is a lot of sense in that, it would also require those low risk people to avoid contact with anyone else otherwise the virus will spread further - such as the larkim example

ah ha! Herd immunity, fine except lots of people will die....because not everyone know or understands their risks and situations, and because some people will knowing break whatever rules you put in place.

To be fair to the government, we're now in a very difficult position (partly of their making), whichever route they take or suggest, something quite bad is going to happen, either economically or with the populations health.

Yeah I can see the reason for it and it would be sensible and allow life and economy to go on but we know that people are not adhering to restrictions now and there will be too many who think its fine we will carry on 'I'm alright Jack' there is too many people who know they are positive & still mixing in the community.

and of course it doesn't take into account all the staff that would be at risk in schools and universities.................

Or family members, particularly grandparents looking after children. A friends dad was shielding during beginning. She’s returned to work after maternity leave and grandparents are taking on child minding. She is very low risk both her and husband WFT but there will be some at risk people also taking on child care. It’s all a worry.
