DocM
i dont see what is happening here as being very different to many european countries, who are also struggling to find a way to keep things open without allowing spread. Nicola sturgeon was heralded as a hero when the rate in Scotland fell to tiny numbers, but now its worse than ever. Track and trace isn't working in Scotland or England or wales. different administrations but all doing poorly.

I agree with that DocM - most of the restrictions we're following are broadly the same throughout Europe. You could argue that cafe / bar culture in mainland Europe is quite different to that across the UK, but I doubt that's a really meaningful distinction at this point. It all comes back to that absence of us being steeled to hold our nerve, and trading that off against trying to avoid catastrophic economic impact for many many businesses. I don't know what the right answer necessarily was there. Add into that the failures of T&T to exercise sufficient control over spread (and how big the impact that that has or hasn't had) and we are where we are. In England the N/S divide is stark too. We're not all poverty stricken up or excessively social here, so I suspect the real story is more one of local R levels in the north lagging behind the bulk of the population (i.e. the south) which encouraged relaxation at the right points for the southern population, and slightly too early for the northern. But that is just speculation on my part. |

I saw some reports yesterday that Covid rampant in quite a lot of London boroughs again. I doubt the north / south divide in covid cases will be relevant in a week or so |

The announcement by the government last week (I think may have been week before I loss track ) they said London cases were low then flashed a graph that showed London with a sharp rise that was as high/higher then north. I think if we trusted the figures it would be half the battle. T&T should not be this difficult. |

ONS comparisons for deprived areas interestingly shows lower rises in deprived areas. ons.gov.uk So don't think the 'poorer North' narrative really stands up. The graph on the page over was supposed to be in response to the narrative that non-compliance is mainly driving up cases. It seems more likely that we are instead just seeing the results of loosening restrictions so this could just be the result of policy rather than behaviour. I'll get back in my box again now, just wanted to draw attention to the known numbers ![]() |

T&T is difficult to do really well but we haven’t even got the basics. There is literally no point in contacting people a week after their risk date, by that point the vast majority will have passed through the danger stage and either passed it on or not. It has to go near-instantaneously from positive test result to informing the 1-3 day prior contacts or whatever the exact parameters are. All this passing data around with dodgy spreadsheets is just killing the process.

larkim - I'm afraid your example is a great illustration of 'it's ok for me to do it in my house' - and teh consequences. I hope that none of them get too ill. gg - maximum fine handed out to a student in Nottingham who organised a party and now people are saying it was too harsh - bbc.co.uk The government/police can't win. |

I agree LMH, and (politely) we've been flagging that to them since about April. BIL is 60, overweight and a former smoker with a relatively sendentary lifestyle so I am concerned about him, but so far the symptoms are mild. My dad said to me last night that he's not a touchy feely person but he's really missed giving his grandsons a hug. That's heartbreaking, but fortunately as we live 45 minutes away from each other there's no temptation to meet up frequently and let our guards down. My wife won't even go to visit her parents when they've been hospitalised (angina attack) now as she's working in school and considers herself a potential risk to them. Again, a difficult and emotional choice to make but I think the right one. |

Other countries are apparently using things like transport payment cards and even bank card transactions to trace people - things that when discussed on the other thread early doors people said were intrusive and unacceptable. Actually there was a fairly strong resistance to using any app... I think the fine is totally reasonable - it appears to have been for refusing to stop the party, not holding it. As the article says, t's likely the fine will be reeduced by magistrates based on income any way |
