This gives you a view on the overlaps in gearing on each of the bikes, ie where on the different chainrings the feel would be the same in the bikes. If the Voodo has a 11-34 cassette then than the jumps between the gears are smaller but the Trek will feel almost the same as having the Voodoo in the big ring.

Final takeaway from gearing, not unsurprisingly given their heritage, the Trek will let you go slightly faster than the Merida, the Merida will get you up hills slightly easier than the Trek.

Saying that I've just seen something odd in the table, the Voodoo and Trek should have had the same numbers for 50-11. I'll have a look later to see what has gone wrong.

Wow, thanks for that ftr, that's way more in depth than I had expected and is highly appreciated! The summary of the differences was helpful too.

I did have a quick count up before my ride and the Voodoo has 48/38/28 on the front and the back is between 32/11. So my usual range seems to be split between the two a little. A lot to consider in a short time before one of them sells out and makes my choice for me! 🙈

The missing piece of that jigsaw though is that the new bike will have the same aero / weight profile as the old one - that alone might make the choice of gears actually selected in practice different to what's on the Voodoo at present. There's something like a 4kg difference between a 2011 Masara (for exammple) and the Merida; you'd expect to need different gearing on bikes with that much weight difference, wouldn't you?

@ ftrobbie it looks like you used 27" as wheel size for Merida & Trek but 26.4" for the Voodoo?

(Based on the values given for the 1:1 or as close as ratios)

See, now you're both saying things I sort of half understand but not enough to know the impact on my current dilemma, haha

larkim good point re weight but in my own case the engine varies by about half of that over a month. Depends on whether I am going through a good or bad phase with diet, exercise and alcohol.

rhb, I didnt think I'd changed anything re wheel sizes but can redo the analysis on gearing with the data Gooner had.

Understood but surely any 1:1 ratio should match the wheel diameter (or is it radius or circumference?) else the calculator is flawed?

Could equally just be me misunderstanding things still...

I think your understanding is correct, there was something wrong, not sure what, will have a look after dinner. It was a gear inches calculator so assume I accidently ticked something or other

The tyres are 700c on the voodoo if that helps? (A little lost by this point)
