Lizzie W May 2024 10:18pm, 14 May 2024 28,551 posts	0 Lizzie W Evening all. We've been advised to remove some lower branches from some small oak trees to help them grow up & bush out. How close to the trunk should we cut & when, and do the cuts need treating? They are about 3" diameter.
Eynsham Red May 2024 8:01am, 15 May 2024 10,992 posts	0 Eynsham Red The best time to remove branches is late January-February, but April, May or June when there is a lot of growth and sap rising. Cut the branches back close to the trunk. Current thinking is not to treat the cuts as they will heal over naturally. Pic courtesy of Deep Green Permaculture

By a mix of neglect and design this year the border looks like this from the self seeding: Probably can't see in the picture but it's full of pollinators
