Waxwings reported in Matlock which is about 5miles away and in Alfreton. I wonder if we are too rural for them?

Field full of peewits seen on my way back from pilates this morning, not as many as we used to get but still quite a number.

Peewits (lapwings) are one of my favourite birds, possibly because of watching flocks of them in the fields when I was a boy. Sad that their numbers have declined so.

Without doubt, they have my favourite song and dance of any bird. Especially when I'm running alone with them on the moors.

Love the way lapwings attack everything and anything when they are breeding. Used to get them on a little marsh area less than a mile from home and they used to breed about 3 miles from home. One of the local fields used to get big numbers of Golden Plovers over winter but sadly the numbers are no where near that now. My favourite wader now is the Oystercatcher love seeing and hearing them on my beach runs when we are at Cleethorpes. They are even on the T-shirt and medal from this years Humber Coastal Half Marathon. |

riggys99, if you think lapwings are aggressive, have you seen avocets? Stroppy, bad-tempered, violent thugs.

I'm minded of Chris Packham's description of avocets and feel their aggression is like getting a headbutt from Audrey Hepburn.
