bonners
Did hear a chiff chaff on our walk on Sunday, but thinking about it would have normally heard them in three or four more locations on that walk.

Quite busy bats in the garden last night - well, about 9:30ish.
But impossible to get any photos. These 2 are the 'best' - but lots with no bats at all and lots with faint blurs.

Any ideas on bat technique? Other than high ISO, pre focus on the area I think they'll be and press a lot and hope. There's no way I can follow them through the viewfinder, they're just too fast and seem to have a random flight. Except when they go into the trees - but then I can't see them.

You’ve not exactly chosen the easiest subject! :)

Probably not much you can do with a fast moving subject in poor light. If you can identify an area of the sky used more often by the bats then you could set up the camera on a tripod pointing at that area, set it up for a rapid burst of several shots, then as you say press and hope.

Or will they be tempted by mouldy grapes on the bird table?
Or even fresher grapes? (or oranges or other fruit)

Late afternoon/early evening run in open woodland yesterday in what were gloomy conditions flushed out a barn owl.

Only the second time I've seen one :)

Was surprised at how big the wingspan is DT, having only seen one fly by my car on a late drive home.

Whenever I see one the first thing I think is ‘gull’. Then, ‘oh wow. It’s a barn owl‘. Followed invariably by, ‘they are bigger than I remembered’ ;-)

I've only ever seen one once to the best of my knowledge, driving home about five years ago on a late summer evening. Scared me witless with its size.

It's the age old story of reach vs. speed I'm afraid.

2 possible approaches:

1. Use a flash with the camera set to a large DoF of around f11.

2. Depending on what glass you have available I'd also try to sacrifice focal length for speed.

If I was getting shots like that with my (for example) 400mm f5.6 at a ridiculous high ISO then my next step would be to see how I fair with my 700-200 f2.8. OK, so I won't be able to get right onto the bat, but what I may be able to achieve is likely to be sharper and allow for some cropping.

Thinking about it, a 'wider' lens could actually makes more sense here as it will give you a greater opportunity to capture one in the frame.

Also I'd be looking to have the camera tripod mounted and use a remote release.
