Do you think they have to pass a test in silly noises DT before they are allowed out alone? 😂

swittle, I grew up in Aughton. I remember when I was a boy there were always loads of lapwings in the fields of Altcar Moss, between Aughton and Crosby. I doubt that is still the case now, but I hope it is.

Our friend Brocky claims it’s on the job description of all wading birds that they must make silly noises
Mine last night was with an adult and it’s fair to say it was well on its way to being there. Which reminds me: I saw a curlew teenager last week out curlewing on his own

Bonners...those huge Woodpigeon flocks in late October- early November are from the continent. I don't recall reading anything about pre migration gatherings over there but it would seem a bit early to be "booking flights" (😂.) I'll dig out the paper written about it and see what's said. It's been a "dead" summer here (Cardiff) with regards to hirundines, I have only seen a single Swallow during my runs locally. Two Blackcaps left singing weakly compared with a dozen just three weeks ago. And the Cetti's have fallen silent, as they do, for a while.

Ahh right, cheers Steve. Still plenty of swallows and house martins around. Not seen the swifts today yet

Nice walk in the country yesterday, lots of swifts and swallows swooping around but no screeching. Then there were a load of young pheasant on the path in front of us but they didn't completely disappear into the hedges, just kept running along the path - most daft and bizarre. Then when perched on a log we watched a pair of kestrels which were joined by a pair of buzzards, then the swifts and swallows again before they all melted away.

The kestrel sounds like a family group ar. The adults take the kids out to teach them kestrelling at this time of year. It’s not uncommon to see three or four birds fairly close together

bonners--I have to take back what I said about Woodies coming from the continent; at least from what the study paper reports they are indeed mainly British birds and not European so your call about pre-migrating groups may well carry some weight.
