I just bumped into macca. He was surprisingly coherent for someone who had been awake for 50 hours and drank 30 litres of coke I forgot to take a selfie but caught a cheeky photo of macca in his new blue gilet... |

Good to bump into you Dave. I think the image captures my complete lack of speed well. Thanks Shanski, NE and FF. My post could have been set in better context with better wording, maybe replace pushing/shoving with jostling, and then mainly at the first 2 full aid stations.I blame lack of sleep. With 2,000 plus people starting in a small square, running often on single tracks it will be cosy. I wouldnt want to put anyone off and would encourage anyone to get involved in any of the races, the whole town appears to go running mad for a week .i would love to come back. |

interesting article on the UTMB, prize monay, and the "amateurism"of the sport. outsideonline.com UTMB are making a lot of money out of this event, it still seems odd that so little prize money is offered out. |

UTMB and the whole ITRA set-up have always been a commercial exercise, so I'm not surprised (or particularly bothered) to see them raking it in. I'm also against big prize purses for this type of event. While I'm not naive enough to think long distance trail running can remain a grass roots amateur sport given the potential for kit manufacturers and event companies to make a killing, I still hope it can retain some of that ethos and don't think large prizes support that. If that means the "professional" athletes don't turn up and race, or even have to get real jobs, then that's fine by me. |

I'm not in favour of big prize money (though some would be nice I've podiumed a couple of races and the best I have got was a box of beer), but the whole UTMB / ITRA thing does jar on me. It seems odd that the organisers can claim to want to keep the sport at an amateur level, whilst making it harder and more expensive to join in. The new system benefits those who can go and race other "UTMB" brand races. That said, Western States with it's small number of qualifying races also annoys me, there are no races this year in benelux or germany, yet 5 in England... |

"UTMB and the whole ITRA set-up have always been a commercial exercise" Just to be clear that UTMB is very much a commercial organisation but the ITRA are a non-profit. |

Yup, to the detriment of other races. If it wasn't for the association between them ITRA wouldn't exist as an "international association"
