Noone measures in inches..... because there is no standard to link it to.

They measure in fake gradations of 2.54cm.

Just scrap it. People will simply have to learn to use real units that actually mean things.

Born in 1970 so I'm nominally a metric kid.

Height of people feet and inches (I know my 5'11'' works out to 1.81m so I can make a stab at what 6ft etc is but it feels weird).

Weight of people is St/Lbs. Weight for cooking in grams. Weight on barbells etc in Kg, which makes it very confusing when CrossFit.com post a workout with weights in lbs because they're American.

Distances are weird. Driving it's in miles, like the road signs, and I learned to run in miles. 10 min/mile pace is more meaningful to me that 6-point-something per Km pace. Cycling, rowing and swimming (when I actually do swim which is rare) are in M or Km. Rowing pace is minutes per 500m, so that's anothere level of weirdness/ need for conversion!

I've never had the first idea of farenheit temperatures. Always seemed like a daft system. Centigrade works and I know where I am with that.

We've got such a hotch-potch of different ways to measure things in this country, for a lot of historical and cultiral reasons, that it's a real mess. MPG makes sense until you buy petrol by the litre etc.

But we've seen on this thread that these (sometimes archaic) systems have strong emotional pulls for a lot of people.

Putting in any system that bans one or the other is just going to cause ructions and get us voting to leave the EU!

(oops. Too late.)

I don't understand the problem with bendy bananas. ;-)

And another thing: How convenient is it to work out pacing for a 5 or 10k in min per mile? We're all doing this wrong!

Yeah Fozzy. Where is your evidence that "no-one" measures in inches? Please post a link to it :-)

My point re:inches is that manufacturers no longer do the markings based on inches - they're done on 2.54cm gradations!

Because there's no modern standard for what an "inch" actually is.

There is for SI units.

No-one actually measures anything in miles - it's a conversion from km etc etc

I don't get why people are resistant to modernise?
