I dont wear socks for running full stop. For cross country & wet road races they can add a lot of extra weight.

However, you need to be aware of places that the shoes might rub and apply plenty of vaseline. It takes a while for feet to harden up.

Always wear socks with XC spikes

Having done no XC this season today I went to Wellingborough for a 15km race came 5th overall in 54.55 and won the vets prize.

I have concluded that I am not missing XC :¬)

Good luck to all the XC runners today especially if you are tackling Parliament Hill! Will look forward to some race reports.

Can anyone who has run any of the multi-terrain races at Wellingborough (ie Gobi!) tell me which shoes would be best? I don't have spikes, but I do have Mudclaws, trail shoes and ordinary trainers. Would the Mudclaws be the best bet? They are brilliant on soft ground, but not so good on hard surfaces - what's the proportion of hard to soft surfaces on this course? I'm doing the 15K next weekend.

Southerns was tough on Saturday at Parliament Hill, SEAA managed another bizarre, over complicated and ultimately poorly organised start to the race again with over 300 runners 'missing' the start despite arriving there (in my case) with 10 minutes to spare after trying to channel nearly 1000 runners through one tent with space for 2 to walk side by side.

Wasn't a great start adding 30 seconds extra running in and 'sprinting' to try to catch back up with the field. Ultimately made little difference to me in 227th...but I guess it did to those looking at top 30 places. Happy enough to come in in 59:19, reckon I had a bit more in the tank but it is such a hard course and I really notice the difference in strength between us long distance runners and the track guys who seemed to fill most fo the palces in front of me. One of the hardest 15km I have run.
