I've bought my first pair of spikes for XC this winter. I'm getting itchy to use them.

I'm eyeing up a new pair of spikes. I missed every XC race last year. We've moved since then though and there's a league here as well as the district and national comps, so I'm looking forward to plenty of cold, wet, muddy races :)

I've never ran any cross country in my puff . I intend to change that this year though having joined a running club and being encouraged to take part in some XC races. I'm well up for giving it a go but it was also suggested that I might want to consider investing in spikes. I've never owned spikes either.

When having a look, I see there are spikes listed as specifically XC spikes and some are middle distance spikes as well as others which are clearly for other purposes. Can middle distance spikes be used for XC too or are they intended purely for track use? Just asking as there doesn't appear to be too many options for pure XC in my size in the sales (don't want to spend lots to try them out).

SuperDave!
I'd say the vast majority of people at my local XC's seem to wear fell shoes. Whats the advantage of spikes over fell shoes, is it a mud clearance issue from the soles?

I've no idea TBH :-O. I already own a pair of salomon speedcross and thought they'd be good enough but never having done a XC race thought I'd seek the knowledge and experience of Fetch ;-)
