Thanks Mrs MJB, nice run at Winsford today, holding back a bit because of the impending marathon next w/e but it blew a few cobwebs away. Felt good to be back out there!

First league race tomorrow I just got myself a pair of Bare Grip 200s rather than spikes, as I can use them for mixed terrain races as well as pure XC.

Done. Got carried away at the start by all the fast runners, first mile in 5.34! Finished as a counter for the team, and thoroughly enjoyed it. XC is ace. Very happy with the Bare Grips as well. What an awesome off road shoe. Nearly a month to wait till the next league match, but there's an open race in a couple of weeks that I can maybe swing over to

morning.
just done 6x muddy & hilly1k reps to practice for first South Yorkshire XC next week on the local grass field at the side of the leisure centre. first 3 in inov8 talon 212s in 4:05 ave each then next 3 in NB 240 XC spikes in ave 3:45.
in an ave 10k SY XC race i would have ran just over 3min faster by wearing spikes over fell shoes

A spikes question - is there an optimum spike lenght for different conditions underfoot? I can see that a longer spike will give more grip as the going gets muddier, but what's the problem with leaving the longest spikes in when the ground is firmer?

It will struggle to get into the ground and may also struggle to come out. Your feet won't thank you when the spike is pushing back up against them.

Interesting RO. I decided against spikes purely because I don't want to buy spikes, then have to buy off road shoes if I have to race on a course not suitable for spikes. I went for Bare Grip 200s. Lighter and more responsive than my NB 240s I had previously, I don't think I'd gain 3 minutes by switching to spikes but if I did I'd switch in flash.

I switched to spikes after running on muddy course where the talons were not grippy enough. Spikes do make a difference in those conditions.
